Before becoming a Counselor I was an Eye surgeon, a graduate from a prestigious Government Medical College. Everyone, virtually everyone believed that this was the best that could happen to anyone- becoming a doctor- what more could you ask for? So I studied, and worked hard and went onto set up a Surgical Hospital- looks fantastic right? Only, I was not happy. Every morning I would detest the idea of going to my clinic and every evening I rushed back home with a sense of relief. As far as others could see, it was absurd. But for me it was real.
And so the day I could see something that I really liked I shifted. Of course, I worked hard to create a new career, that too a non-conventional one- And not only did I become successful, I am happy and always passionate about doing more, growing more and learning more.
Since I started my counseling center I have met scores of grown ups in apparently good position in life and career but who lack the enthusiasm, the passion for what they do. There is money but the happiness is missing and thus everyday is about getting up and going to work and coming back and trying to forget the work. Have you met someone similar?
Career makes about one- third of our entire life span and so it is important. Also because it gives up the much needed money. But what we forget is that it is still only one-third, meaning two-thirds of it is something else- called as life. And life is all about living and being happy all motivated and passionate. Isn’t it obvious that when one- third of our life is not- interesting how it would affect the rest?
So why does this happen? Our education system majorly talks about subjects and knowledge and learning and exams and results. All of these are and can be acquired and managed thus they are all external. What is our inherent and inborn talent and personality is what matters most. So whatever we may be exposed to, whatever we might find attractive, but if it doesn’t gel with what we are the attraction is bound to be short lived. And when that happens passion and motivation goes missing and progress goes in slow motion.
Hence when we are planning for our career we need to choose that which blend with what we are and what we are made for. That is called our “Aptitude”. If we can blend our Aptitude with our Interests, Dreams, Aspirations, Family and Social make up, that is when we get that ‘Aha’ feeling about our career. Money would of course come with any career but when that money comes with inner happiness, enthusiasm for life and passion that, is when the Career becomes fantastic.
Hence Aptitude testing with an experienced counselor who can help you understand yourself 360 degrees and suggest you options that would be best for you, is not an expenditure but an investment before you spend lakhs for a career that you would not eventually like.
